Where to do your HEARING TEST in Rio de Janeiro

If you are looking for a hearing test in Rio de Janeiro, hi there! My name is Dr. Luciano Moreira and I’m an ENT doctor focused in hearing loss and ear surgery. If you have found your way here, you’ve likely noticed that something has changed in your hearing. Perhaps it’s that “ringing” or tinnitus that won’t go away, difficulty understanding what people say in noisy environments, or a sensation of a “blocked ear” that many mistake for excess wax. As an ENT doctor specializing in deafness and hearing surgeries, I see this every day in my office. And my first instruction is always the same: we need a precise map of your hearing. That map is the audiometry.

But where can you get this exam done in Rio de Janeiro with the necessary quality for a safe diagnosis? As someone who dedicates their life to treating conditions like otosclerosis, I know that the precision of the exam defines the success of the treatment.

Why a hearing test is not “Just Another Exam”

Many patients arrive at my office with exams done in a rush, in poorly isolated booths, or with uncalibrated equipment. The danger of this is immense. In otosclerosis, for example, a disease that affects the tiny bones of the ear (especially the stapes) and causes progressive hearing loss, subtle details in the audiometry—such as the difference between bone conduction and air conduction (what we call the air-bone gap)—are the key to indicating a surgery that can restore hearing.

If the exam is not reliable, we may miss the chance for an early diagnosis or, worse, indicate an inappropriate treatment. That is why choosing the location is just as important as choosing the doctor.

Where to do an hearing test in Rio de Janeiro: My recommendation

To make your journey easier, here is my reccomendation where I entrust my patients’ hearing to be tested.

1. Copacabana: The Sonora team is THE reference in Rio de Janeiro

In the heart of Copacabana is where I concentrate my practice and where my trusted team works. At Clínica Sonora, located in the Copacabana Medical Center (Rua Siqueira Campos, 93 – Suite 1101), we perform tonal audiometry, vocal audiometry, and impedance audiometry with speech therapists specialized in diagnostic and auditory rehabilitation.

Unlike places where the exam is done in claustrophobic “tunnels,” we value comfortable acoustic rooms and humanized care. This is where I evaluate my stapedectomy and cochlear implant patients. If you are looking for a detailed evaluation, especially if you suspect otosclerosis or sensorineural hearing loss, this is the place I recommend with my eyes closed.

What to expect from the exam?

Do not be afraid. Audiometry is painless and non-invasive.

  1. Pure Tone Audiometry: You enter a soundproof booth, put on headphones, and press a button when you hear sounds (beeps) of different frequencies.

  2. Speech Audiometry (Vocal): You repeat words so we can test your ability to understand speech (crucial for knowing if a hearing aid or surgery will be successful).

  3. Impedance Audiometry: A small probe is placed in the ear to verify the mobility of the eardrum and the ossicles. It is quick and crucial for detecting the stiffness typical of otosclerosis.

An Important Warning

Hearing loss isolates. It affects your social, professional, and emotional life, potentially leading to anxiety and depression. Do not treat your hearing as something secondary. If you have a family history of deafness, tinnitus, or feel that you “hear but don’t understand,” seek a specialist.

I, Dr. Luciano Moreira, and my wife, Paula Pfeifer (creator of Crônicas da Surdez and the Surdos Que Ouvem / Deaf Who Hear movement), work tirelessly to show that the diagnosis is just the beginning of a new life. Technology exists to reconnect us to the world.

Schedule your exam, ask your questions, and don’t let the silence win.
